You bet your ass they were! Cannes is one massive sales fest.

If you don't get paid for making your films then you are, by definition, amature. Theres no shame in that. Amature, the word, just sounds negative because of how it is used sometimes.

I think the name for us is aspiring professionals. I don't consider what I do as a hobby but a job, and one I will be paid to do in the future. The aim of this list is to help filmmakers, advice on equipment, encouragement when things go wrong, talk on films, make contacts, it's a very useful source for filmmakers as they are starting out so they can talk to filmmakers who are in similar situations to them. It is not possible to always be positive especially when things go wrong, but when things are going great thats good and when things go wrong it's a shoulder to lean on and get help and advice,

Actually Matt I meant was anyone from this Forum at cannes...but the way I phrased could have been better.
To Kathy, you are right we must support all endeavours on this forum, but not at the expense of fair critism.

yuk i hate the word amateur, always conjures up pictures of people in suits on golf courses.
also i dont think suddenly getting paid makes you a pro. a pro in my mind is someone who knows what they are doing inside, out with there eyes closed and actually does it.

Agree though that some people do have fits on this board, i think a lot of people dont realise the difference between, advice, criticism and personal slanging.

technically i get paid for my film stuff , as i run two business and the money from one of them funds the film. its a good tax dodge as well so does that make me instantly pro ?

mmmm..Interesting point. Maybe we should find a term which actually says what we are. An all emcompassing phrase that says more than 'Film maker', pro or am. Aspiring professional sounds alittle demeaning, sorry Kathy but I know what you are gettin at. We all are trying our best and dont really want to be labelled.
So any surggestions for a collective noun of filmmakers?

Neither do I, but some people seem to want to qualify it with 'professional', 'ameteur', or 'aspiring', as though it says something more, when it doen't. So maybe there is a need for a term that identifies us. But then again maybe we dont...

This not a hobby for me Kwor,I took out loan and I am saving my money.I am turning my co into a Pro-Film co.You have to start some where, I want to school may few movies now it is time to move into Pro with the Big people.I am puting together a real Business plain,marketing plain,looking for indie Theaters,Reading books ,asking ?????.Found crew,actors,geting more $$$$$$$$$$$$ So this is NO hobby,this real thing more then a dream, But a career!!!
